La numérisation systématique des corpus de journaux offre des perspectives nouvelles et imprévues aux historiens de la presse comme à ceux de la littérature. A ce titre, l'enquête que mène Jean-Luc Buard, bibliographe et chercheur, produit tout à la fois un livre d'histoires, un roman d'investigation, un méta-corpus de bibliothèques numériques, une bibliographie de référence et une réflexion sur le patrimoine et ses acteurs.
Prenant l'exemple d'un genre littéraire éphémère, celui du feuilleton-nouvelle, étudié par le prisme d'un de ses auteurs les plus éminents, sinon les mieux connus : le Marseillais Marie Aycard, et suivant particulièrement son texte le plus diffusé, dans des centaines de journaux à travers le monde durant des décennies - une nouvelle intitulée "L'écu de cent sous" (1840) -, Jean-Luc Buard fait revivre le monde des journaux parisiens au mitan du XIXe siècle et les pratiques, souvent souterraines, des éditeurs du monde entier.
De là, son enquête devient une traversée magnifiquement documentée de l'histoire de la presse ainsi qu'une analyse comparative inédite des gisements numérisés, institutionnels ou d'initiative privée. Le lecteur, comme le fit l'auteur, verra que l'exploitation méthodique des données numériques révèles des informations inédites sur l'évolution de ce patrimoine populaire considérable dont la préservation est souvent menacée.
En étudiant l'oeuvre du feuilletoniste Marie Aycard et sa propagation internationale, Jean-Luc Buard conduit une enquête qui explore les temps de plusieurs "médiasphères". Celle tout d'abord de la presse quotidienne du milieu du XIXe siècle, ses réseaux, ses fortunes diverses et le difficile statut de l'auteur salarié. Celle de notre époque numérique ensuite, qui permet par une étude systématique des séries, de suivre le cours des textes à travers d'innombrables titres.
A partir d'une thèse exhaustive (Paris XIII, 2015), l'auteur propose à la fois une méthode d'investigation dans un corpus actualisé et la vie brève d'un auteur qui est aussi un personnage.
